The newly emerged SARS-CoV-2 virus is shed by infected individuals (both asymptomatic and symptomatic) through bodily waste. Therefore, it is present in wastewater leaving businesses and homes on the way to municipal water treatment facilities. This provides useful environmental testing locations for COVID-19 ranging in size and scope – from entire city populations down to individual buildings and facilities.
The presence of the virus in these waste streams offers an opportunity for early detection and outbreak trending at a customizable level, dictated by where sampling occurs. As a result, wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) complements individual clinical tests and will help health authorities and decision makers focus their attention where it is needed most.
OSP utilizes the same protocols relied on by health authorities worldwide to detect and quantify the genetic signature (RNA) of the COVID-19 virus in wastewater samples.
How do I sample my facility?
By installing a sampler in the wastewater stream exiting your facility, samples can be gathered at regular intervals and submitted to OSP for testing. The goal is to create a consistent sampling and analyzing routine such that changes in trends can be easily identified.
